Assessment of Care Needs and Available Capacity

Reports and testimony in family cases focus initially on the care needed by a person or persons, be they children or vulnerable adults. Such assessments quantify need and may be used to inform the Court when care arrangements have become unstable, for example where carers have separated and/or are in the process of divorce.

A second aspect of family work concerns the assessment of a person's capacity to care for current or potential dependents, be they children or vulnerable adults. Evaluation takes account of that person's demonstrated physical capacity and cognitive skills, as well as of the resources, such as housing, at their disposal.
